About NetBackup 7.6 version numbering

To ensure a quality release, Symantec chose to incorporate the 7.6.0.1 maintenance release into the 7.6 release. Therefore, the General Availability (GA) version of NetBackup 7.6 has been delivered in a full media kit and downloadable packages that are labeled as version 7.6.0.1. This package provides an upgrade process for customers running previous versions of NetBackup (6.x or 7.x) or the 7.6 First

Availability (FA) release. 

The following list describes some key points about the NetBackup 7.6.0.1 and NetBackup OpsCenter 7.6.0.1 releases:

■ The first GA release of NetBackup 7.6 is versioned as 7.6.0.1.

■ NetBackup 7.6.0.1 media and electronic images are full product images. Neither a 7.6 media release nor a 7.6.0.1 maintenance patch release will be made publicly available.

■ References to version 7.6 in the NetBackup software, documentation, and DVDs apply to the 7.6.0.1 release.

■ The NetBackup 7.6.0.1 release does not have a rollback capability. Restoring from backup is the rollback option. Future 7.6 maintenance releases will have rollback capability.

■ Localized versions of NetBackup (French, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese) are based on NetBackup 7.6.0.1. Language packs are not available for the NetBackup 7.6 FA release.

New Features:

In NetBackup 7.6, the Sybase SQL Anywhere database (NetBackup catalog) has been upgraded to version 12.0.1.

This upgrade contains some of the following improvements:

■ Automatic tuning of server threads

■ Column statistics management

■ Improved indexing performance

■ Faster validation of large databases

■ Improved request prioritization

Installation:

Memory:

■ Master servers in a production environment should have a minimum of 8 GB of memory each.

■ Media servers in a production environment should have a minimum of 4 GB of memory each.

Disk space:

■ The exact amount of space that is required to accommodate the server software and the NetBackup catalogs depends on the hardware platform.

■ NetBackup catalogs contain information about your backups that become larger as you use the product. 

The disk space that the catalogs require depends primarily on the following aspects of your backup configuration:

■ The number of files that are backed up.

■ The frequency of your backups.

■ The amount of time that you set to retain your backup data.

■ Symantec recommends that you have a minimum available disk space of 5% in any Disk Storage Unit volume or file system

Open the Browser.exe from the Symantec source.

Even if it is required you can check the pre-installation check list also.

Install Server Software (Master and Media), Client tools and Java console.

Welcome Screen .....

Accept the End User License Agreement.

Select the installation type like Typical or Custom ...

Type the License key ...  Then select the Master server.

Provide the master server name and EMM server name.

Entire installation summary list ...

Press install button, then the installation starts ....

Automatically installs the Database also.

Now the netbackup successfully installed. If you have any additional license then add the license keys.

Now you can able to see the Netbackup administration console.

Create a disk type storage unit.

Specify the storage unit and select the media server information.

Now the storage unit successfully created in the media server.

Create a new policy to define the backup configuration.

Define the policy name, policy type and storage unit information.

Define the schedule name, backup type and start window.

Add the backup client and backup selection.

Run one manual backup.

Backup done successfully.

Now open the client tool to restore.

You can see the backup image and the files. Select the file which you need to restore.

Select the restoration location.

The selected file restores successfully.

Now the file restored successfully.

Netbackup Installation Steps on Linux

Netbackup Installation Steps on Linux :


1. Extract the NetBAckup Source using the following command.

# tar  -zxvf  NB_7.0_LinuxR_x86_64_GA.tar.gz

# cd NB_7.0_LinuxR_x86_64

# ls

You can a install script and this script is used to install netbackup in Linux.

# ./install

The above command will install the netbackup software interactively.

2. Core product DVD comes with Installation of Server Software (Master & Media) and Opscenter Software.

You can select the Install server Software.

3. Then, it will ask you install Master or Media server.

4. Default Installation path : /usr/openv
Netbackup Binary files : /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
Catalog : /usr/openv/db
Media and Device : /usr/openv/volmgr
Log : /usr/openv/logs

 Installing All the required files to this location.

Terminating and starting all the netbackup process.

Installing NB_java and Log files and Daemon.

Startup scripts are copied to the Run Level location like /etc/rc.d

Add the License Key. 

Any additional license key.

 Successfully Installed and It starts all the processes.

You can open the Admin Console using the following command.

# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin

# ./jnbSA &

or

# jbpSA &

NetApp NDMP backup configuration using Symantec NetBackup

NetApp NDMP backup configuration using Symantec NetBackup:

NetBackup accomplishes backup and recovery of Network Appliance filers using NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol), an open protocol co-developed by Network Appliance. The NDMP protocol allows NDMP client software, such as VERITAS NetBackup, to send messages over the network to an NDMP server application to initiate and control backup and restore operations. The NDMP server application resides on an NDMP host, such as a NetApp F760. The NetBackup for NDMP Server is where the NetBackup for NDMP software is installed; it may be a master server, a media server or both. If it is only a media server, however, the assumption is that there is a separate NetBackup master server to control backup and restore operations.

To configure the NDMP HOST configuration, install the NBU Plugin software in the Master Server.

Download the NBU Plugin software from NetApp Support site and install to the master server.

Double click the NBU Plugin software.

Select the default installation path.

Select the port number. Default port number is 8085.

Then, press install and installation starts immediately.  

Now open the Netbackup system admin console.

Specify the NetApp Filer's Host name.

Provide the NDMP Credentials, which is configured in the NetApp filer.

Once the Master server get connected to the NetApp filer you will get this information.

Now, you have to create the Policy for the NDMP Backup. Select the Policy type is NDMP.

Define a schedule also. 

For NDMP Backup you don't have User backup and User Archive.

Add the client (NetAPp Filer)

Add the Volume information which you want to take a backup.

Now you run manual backup. Check in the Activity Monitor. The backup was successful.

In the NetApp Filer, we have a volume called Voltest.
This is the volume we taking a backup.

Add some new contents to the existing file in the path /vol/voltest/f1.

Using BAR, you can restore the volume and files.

The restore also successfully done.

Now check from filer, the new entry is not available. 

Now as per the schedule, it will take the backup of NetApp filer.
